Because of its multiple co-benefits, soil organic matter, of which carbon is the main constituent, is at the crossroads of several Sustainable Development Goals, and three United Nations Conventions : on Climate (UNFCCC), Biodiversity (CBD) and Desertification (UNCCD).

In this context, there is a major challenge in referencing not only the analyses but also the associated metadata in interoperable databases.

The FAIR principles (Easy to Find, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) should help to achieve this. The DATA4C+ project will focus in particular on structuring soil carbon databases, their ergonomics to facilitate information searches, access management and data format to make them potentially exchangeable and reusable over time.
